During this 14 to 16 hour/2-day Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) training course, you will develop a strong understanding of the Scrum framework, the Scrum roles, events and artifacts, and the role of the Scrum Master in Scrum. Indeed, as a certified Scrum Master you will learn how help your Scrum Team perform at their highest level! The Certified ScrumMaster course is an entry-level Scrum certification course that addresses the foundations of Scrum methodology for Scrum Masters and anyone responsible for an effective introduction and application of the Scrum framework.

What You Will Learn

The Certified Scrum Master training course leaves trainees more knowledgeable in Scrum, the Scrum Framework, and the role of the Scrum Master. Examples of what you will learn on the CSM course are as follows:

  • The role/responsibilities of the Scrum Master;
  • Develop an understanding the Scrum framework well enough to return to work and take up the role of Scrum Master, or to apply the principles and practices of Scrum to any other role in the organisation (for example, developer, tester, manager);
  • How to facilitate the Scrum events: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospective;
  • Be able to recognise organisational impediments that block the Scrum team;
  • How to improve the work of the Scrum team by facilitating creativity, empowerment and self-organisation, and how to guide Scrum team members to improve their practices so each increment of functionality is “potentially shippable”;
  • How to foster a collaborative relationship between Scrum teams and the Product Owner/customer so that the product/project delivery meet the needs of the business;
  • How to work with managers, directors and executives within the organisation to help them understand how to support a Scrum initiative.

Certified ScrumMaster Certification

In order to be able to take the CSM exam, you must first take an in-person two day (14 to 16 hour) Certified ScrumMaster course with one of Edinburgh Agile’s Certified Scrum Trainers (CSTs®). CSM course attendance is required by the Scrum Alliance to earn the CSM certification; individuals can NOT skip the CSM training course requirement to gain access to the online CSM test. After completing the Certified ScrumMaster course, the trainee will receive a welcome email from Scrum Alliance, containing a link to activate their certification account, where they will be able to complete the CSM test.

The CSM exam has 50 multiple-choice questions about Scrum and the role of the Scrum Master. The exam has a passing score of 74%. Trainees have two attempts within 90 calendar days (after they receive their initial welcome email) to pass the CSM exam at no cost. After two attempts and/or 90 calendar days, they will be prompted to pay $25 USD for each additional attempt at the CSM certification exam.

Attendees who attend the Professional ScrumMaster (CSM) course, and go on to pass the CSM certification exam will receive:

Certified ScrumMaster Course Audience

The CSM course is suitable for everyone who is new to or about to start using Scrum, or has already gathered some experience and wants to deepen their understanding of Scrum. The Scrum Master role is the focus of the CSM course, however the course is also suitable for Scrum team members or managers who would like to develop a foundation understanding of Scrum. Examples of CSM course participants include:

  • People who are new to, or have just about to become Scrum Masters, having previously carried out roles such as Project Manager;
  • Experienced Scrum Masters who want to consolidate their knowledge and understanding of Scrum and to learn/share ideas around effective Scrum techniques;
  • Programme managers, portfolio managers, delivery managers, heads of departments, and other senior leadership who need to learn how to support their Scrum teams;
  • People who work with clients that have requested a Scrum approach, and as a consequence want understand what Scrum is, and what it really means.

Certified ScrumMaster Course Pre-Requisites

The CSM course is an entry-level Scrum course and therefore no specific experience is required to attend and benefit however before attending the Certfied Scrum Master course, we do recommend that you read and become familiar with 1) the Agile Manifesto, 2) the Scrum Guide and 3) the Scrum Alliance CSM learning Objectives.

What is CSM certification?

The Certified ScrumMaster is an entry-level certification offered by Scrum Alliance that is designed to give Scrum practitioners an initial, foundation understanding of the framework. … professionals who have earned the CSM have a foundation upon which they will understand and be aware of how to undertake the role of either ScrumMaster, or Scrum team member as part of a product delivery using Scrum.

How do I get the CSM certification?

In order to get the CSM certification you need to attend a two day classroom CSM training course or live virtual online CSM training course with one of our Certified Scrum Trainers (CSTs). Scrum Alliance dictates that CSM course attendance is required to take the CSM exam, and carn the CSM certification;. You are not able to skip the course regardless of your experience and knowledge of Scrum.

Is the CSM exam hard?

The CSM exam is generally easy to pass (in comparison to the PSM exam) with a passing grade of approximately 74%.

As you will have attended a two-day CSM training course prior to taking the exam you will be in a strong position to pass the CSM exam and obtain your Certified ScrumMaster credential.

How do I pass the CSM certification exam?

By reading The Scrum Guide, and attending the Certified ScrumMaster course you will be in a strong position to take and pass the CSM exam. You might opt to undertake some further reading following your course but this is not necessary.

Can I do the CSM course online?

Yes. Since c. April 2020 Scrum Alliance have been allowing courses to be in an online format, including the Certified ScrumMaster training course. Therefore it is possilble to opt for either a classroom based CSM coruse, or an online CSM course.

How much does it cost to become a Certified ScrumMaster?

Do I need to renew my CSM certification?

Yes the Certified ScrumMaster certification does require a renewal. Indeed Scrum Alliance recommends that CSM certificate holders remain active in their learning journey, which is why they offer renewal with continuing education credits every two years.
